Exercising in Eating Disorder Recovery: Yes or No?

Many people are warned against exercising in eating disorder recovery, but that doesn't mean that exercise cannot be part of a healthy, vital recovery journey. In fact, regular and unapologetic exercise was crucial to my getting better.

Exercising While in Eating Disorder Recovery

My therapist and doctors told me it was okay to exercise but to be mindful of the way I was feeling during my workouts. This mindfulness helped me gain greater awareness of my motivations behind exercising. I could gauge whether I was working out to punish myself for eating what I thought was too much or for not being thin enough, or if I was working out for the sheer joy of movement.

I really enjoy strength training, it is fun for me as well. Cardio I feel makes me lose weight more quickly but then I'm always hungry for carbs afterwards so I worry that I won't be able to control my eating if I do a lot of cardio.
