Self Help Resources, Information & Support

Self-help or self-improvement refers to self-guided improvement. For many, self-help has become an integral part of treatment for emotional issues, behavior problems, mental health problems, and for dealing with stressful situations. Many people find that self-help and support groups are an invaluable resource for recovery and for empowerment.

We are just beginning to put together the Self-Help section of the HealthyPlace.com website. Over the next few months, we'll be adding articles and videos covering different aspects of self-help for mental health and related concerns.

Right now, we have three excellent resources:

  1. Self-Help Stuff That Works - Most of the material here will help you feel better more often by changing the way you think or the way you deal with other people.
  2. Essays on Psychology and Life - written by Richard Grossman, Ph.D. covers the subjects of the importance of having "voice" rather than "voicelessness," communication in relationships, and different aspects of therapy.
  3. Inter Dependence - is a site covering relationship self-help. If you are interested in how happy couples stay that way or why you're treated the way you are, come by and read these insightful articles.

Many times, when people refer to "self help," they are talking about self-help groups. Self-help groups include people with a common bond who voluntarily come together to share, reach out, and learn from each other in a trusting, supportive, and open environment.

Self-help is based on the principle of helping oneself and others at the same time. Thus, self-help is a mutual process. Talking over these problems with other people who have lived through them can help us cope with today's difficulties and help us learn how to deal with tomorrow. That's what the HealthyPlace Support Network is all about. It's our version of the social network, but designed for people with mental health concerns, along with their family members and other loved ones. We hope you'll join us.
