Two Important Facts for Mental Health Awareness Month

Here's what's happening on the HealthyPlace site this week:

Mental Health Awareness Month is about spreading awareness of the issues around mental health. Discover two important things you should know on HealthyPlace.

Two Important Facts for Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month is in full swing, and there is a lot to be aware of. Among the myriad important facets of mental health and mental health awareness month, two facts form a solid foundation in becoming aware of mental health issues:

  • Mental health affects everyone on the planet, so you aren’t alone
  • Mental health is highly personal, so you can’t be reduced by being lumped into a statistic

According to sources like the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), over 43 million adults in the United States alone—about 20% of the population—experiences a diagnosable mental illness in any given year.

And that just represents diagnosable disorders. Every human being has mental health ups and downs throughout life. Stress, relationship issues, and more abound.

When you experience mental health struggles, you’re not alone. When you experience triumphs, you’re not alone, either. Your struggles and triumphs are, however, unique to you.

Sometimes individuals become lost in the numbers. To avoid that, it’s okay to pay attention to your own experiences. What is life like for you right now? What makes it worse? Better? Know yourself, be true to yourself, and create your own version of mental health.
