Anxiety – Tough Times
Coping with anxiety after a tragedy can feel impossible. When something terrible happens, we are faced with so much to process. Suddenly, it can feel as if the world is dark and scary. With the help of coping techniques, handling anxiety after a tragedy is easier.
A large part of my experience with anxiety has been linked knowing I don't have control and my fear of instability. While I know that I can't control everything, these coping techniques for both rational and irrational fears have helped me avoid anxiety. The one thing therapy taught me is that I can cope with anxiety even if I don't have control.
I've discovered that there is a strong correlation between my depression and anxiety and my physical confidence. It's about more than loving the way I look. It's about loving how strong I've become. I've taken steps to increase my physical confidence, which helps me feel so much better when things start to feel rough.
This year, as I stared at the candles on my birthday cake, I could not take my eyes off of the second digit that said I was getting older—seven. Wow, I thought. Twenty-seven. What Should I Have Done Already?. It amazes me how fast one birthday turns into the next. Twenty is so far away, and 30 is right around the corner.I'm getting old and I'm not where I thought I'd be.

I've found if I dig up my root fear, I can better cope with death anxiety. I have a strange relationship with death. I soak up true crime podcasts and articles, all the while fearing the numerous ways I could die each day. Sometimes it all feels like a lot to cope with (Five Reasons You Should Keep A Fear Journal). I have found that getting to the root of my death anxiety helps me lessen my anxiety about death.
Knowing there are benefits of going to therapy doesn't make the decision to go much easier. The decision to go to therapy can be a deeply personal one based on a number of key factors. For me, the decision was not at all easy. In fact, it took me years of knowing I probably needed to go to therapy before I actually went. In the process of realizing that I needed some talk therapy, I also realized a benefit of going to therapy was defeating indecision.
When you're under pressure, it can be hard to handle anxiety at work. Many people who have anxiety struggle with change, myself included. It takes awhile for me to adjust to any new situation. At the beginning, I doubt everything and make up the worst scenarios in my head--getting shoved into a locker in middle school, failing college, getting fired from a job, etc. But one thing I learned recently is that even though change can be scary, it can also be a good thing by challenging my anxiety.
