Adult ADHD Relationships and Planning for Change

March 5, 2013 Elizabeth Prager

Adult ADHD relationships can be troubling at times, especially if you and your partner don’t take ADHD symptoms into account. For instance, in my adult ADHD relationship, we have to plan for change. Change can be difficult for some adults with ADHD. I'm not a spontaneous person and changes to plans really ruffle my feathers.

Good news though, my non-adult ADHD spouse and I have come up with a solution to that. It’s called previewing. Turns out, I love being previewed. I thrive when I'm previewed. After repeated meltdowns and periods of extreme grumpy-ness (aka meltdowns), we discovered that I respond better to changes when I know they’re coming.

Watch the video. We explain exactly how previewing works and how it may improve your adult ADHD relationship. Part two of "Adult ADHD Relationships and Planning for Change" is here.

Before I was diagnosed, I had a job with little structure as an ESL teacher where I would occasionally get a brand new student from another country with no notice whatsoever. Now I understand why I was so tense and utterly freaked out when this would happen. Thank you.

You're welcome, Mig! I used to teach and I found it super tough whenever I had a plan for what was going to happen on a given day only to have my principal change things on me! I totally understand!
