A Message From Jessica
Hi. My name is Boris Dolin. About five years ago when I was finishing up high school, my sister was diagnosed with manic depression. As my photo essay explains, her diagnoses, her going off her medication, her mania and her eventual recovery were all very trying on my family. At first I took the pictures in my photo essay just to see if any would turn out-I was taking photography in school, and my always interesting sister seemed like a great subject. But once her mania developed, my photographs became even more personal, and I found that taking pictures of my sister helped me move away from all the craziness that was happening around me. I was able to look at the whole experience from a different perspective. As all of the events described in the essay progressed, I began taking the pictures more to document what was happening, yet never knew how the final collection of photos and words would turn out. After putting together the photos I had taken, some of my sisters's writings and my comments on the photographs, I had a story which was both a way for my family and my sister to remember what happened and a way to teach others about Manic Depression and how one family dealt with it. I hope you enjoy it and can learn a little too.
