Watch What You Swallow With That Pill

Experts warn common foods can affect how certain meds are metabolized

If you're like most folks, remembering that daily dose of cholesterol medication -- or that heart pill or blood pressure drug -- is often easier when you take it with a meal.

However, the truth is what you eat at one of those meals could have some detrimental effects on how a medication works in your body.

One of the most dangerous combinations involves grapefruit, a breakfast staple for many.

"Grapefruit juice influences the production of liver enzymes, which can affect the way certain drugs are metabolized by the body," says Michael Coyne, a registered pharmacist and associate vice president of pharmacy at Staten Island University Hospital in New York City.

This can cause some drugs to end up in the bloodstream in a higher concentration than you are prescribed, Coyne explains. With other drugs, it can inhibit concentration so you don't get the level of treatment you need.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder Overlooked

Often missed and tough to treat, experts say many suffer

It can be so debilitating that its sufferers can't function, yet experts say generalized anxiety disorder is often missed and tough to treat.

"If it's bad enough, it can lead to people actually not being able to work because they're so caught up in their worries their productivity goes way down and they can lose their jobs," says Dr. David Spiegel, research professor and director of clinical and medical programs at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders, Boston University.

"In severe cases, it can be quite disabling," he says. "Most people don't have it to that extent, but their quality of life can be pretty seriously affected."

Barbara's Journal

E-Mails from the Edge

Barbara - Anxiety Community JournalerA lot has happened this week. My heart is hurting really bad. I've fallen really hard for Ed, and its getting harder and harder to ignore my feelings and just be good old family friend Barb, who'll do all your errands, take care of your house, walk the dog, teach the kid music, design the graphics, and put out the newspaper. I'm confused as to what exactly I am. I mean, I'm happy to be helping Ed, but is he keeping me around because I'm free help or because he likes having me around and is creating stuff to keep me close? I vote for #2, but I am still very confused. I have house sat for him twice in April already. Living at his house, sleeping in his bed, taking care of his menagerie, and getting a taste of living in a nice big house filled with books and antiques surrounded by a beautiful garden, having access to an art studio, keys to a SUV, all the amenities I could ever want is very, very intoxicating to me. In fact, its everything I want. And then there is Ed himself. The first man in a long time who isn't afraid of my emotional problems, who talks to me, who writes to me, who compliments me, who jokes with me, who hugs me, who massages me, who has done so many nice things for me I've lost track. How am I supposed to react? I am very susceptible to kindness. I am a tiny, weak seedling getting its first dose of sun, food and warmth.

"Controlling People"
on HealthyPlace.com Radio

Does this sound like someone you know?

  • Always needs to be right

  • Tells you who you are and what you think

  • Implies that you're wrong or inadequate when you don't agree

  • Is threatened by people different from him or herself

  • Feels attacked when questioned

  • Doesn't seem to really hear or see you

This Saturday, find out what it takes to free yourself from controlling types; the kinds of people who inflict verbal abuse, battering, stalking, harassment, hate crimes, gang violence, tyranny, terrorism, and territorial invasion. And you can call in and ask our psychiatrist what to do about your personal situation.

Join us this Saturday evening at 4 p.m. PST, 6 CST, 7 EST as we discuss this problem. You can call in and share your stories and ask our psychiatrist your personal questions.

Powerful Documentary Films
at HealthyPlace.com

HealthyPlace.com unveiled four of the most powerful mental health videos you have ever seen. These are stories about sexual molestation, rape, eating disorders and teens trapped in abusive relationships.

What makes these mental health films different and so moving is that they describe the impact of physical and sexual violence and misperceptions on their victims. And for the most part, these stories are told in the victim's or sufferer's own words.

You can watch them using your windows media player. We've also set up special bulletin boards for your feedback.

Looking for answers , im a 65 yr old man , in may of 1999 i was diagnosed to have panic and anxiety attacks within days of being put in xanax i began experiencing a slight disorientation in my walk and my ears started to feel like they were closing , very similar to riding up on an elevator. and then they would open again. after seeing numerous Dr's and ENT'S and being told my sinuses were congested for the last two yrs, Ive just about given up with going to Drs as this congestion has not left . Ive had hearing tests which lead to hearing aids Ive been to neurologist, had cat scans , MRI'S and have been told they can not find anything but congested sinuses. my head feels like it is stuffed or cloudy. i have tried flo-nase / afrin. to no avail .
