Paths to Natural Living

Highly Recommends These Books

You may purchase any of these books through Amazon.com.

Peace is Every Step by Thich Nhat Hahn

One of my favorite books! I keep it with me where ever I go. Thich Nhat Hanh is a very wise teacher and shows us how to find peace in everything we do. In this book you will find instructions on breathing and calming your mind, and most important how to remain calm even in the most frustrating situations and find joy in the most mundane of tasks.

The Present Moment box set
A Retreat on the Practice of Mindfulness
by Thich Nhat Hahn

A six audio tape set of Dharma talks and instruction on meditation, breathing, Five Prostrations and deep listening among other wonderful lessons for mindful living. Also included are songs sung by Sister Chan Khong. I have been most fortunate to attend one of his retreats and listening to these audio tapes is like returning to this wonderful experience.

Stepping into Freedom by Thich Nhat Hahn

This book was written as a guideline for novice nuns and monks in the Buddhist tradition. It is a wonderful source for anyone practicing mindful living. Stepping into Freedom includes gathas (short poems or verses for mindfulness), precepts, mindful manners, encouraging words, a talk for young nuns and monks, precept recitation ceremony, poems and sources.

Present Moment Wonderful Moment by Thich Nhat Hahn

More mindfulness verses for daily living. This is one of the first books I purchased as a student on Thay's teachings. An excellent introduction for mindful living.

For a Future to be Possible by Thich Nhat Hahn

In this book Thay explains in great detail the 5 mindfulness trainings (precepts). While on retreat with this great teacher and man of peace I committed to these 5 precepts, and feel they are a wonderful guideline for daily living no matter what religion you live. I have not finished this book yet but am enjoying each word.

Spiritual Advice
for Buddhists and Christians
by H.H. the Dalai Lama

In July of 1996 Buddhist and Christian leaders, teachers and practitioners met at the Abbey of Gethsemane to participate in dialogue on the spiritual life. This wonderful book contains the "talks" given by H.H. the Dalai Lama during the historic Gethsemane Encounter. In these edited talks he discusses Tibet Buddhist spirituality, addresses Christian spirituality and gives advise for both. I have ordered, and am looking forward to reading, the Gethsemane Encounter which includes dialogue from all speakers, Christian and Buddhist, attending.

The Sivananda Companion to Yoga by Lucy Lidell

This is the first book I purchased when I started practicing yoga. It illustrates many postures with easy to follow instructions and practice charts. It also discusses the breathing techniques, diet and meditation. I have not found a better guide for those wanting to learn more about all aspects of yoga, and recommend it to anyone whether just starting out or have been practicing for years.

Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda

This book is dedicated to my great great uncle Luther Burbank who had the privilege to become friends with this peaceful and wise man. This book tells of Paramahansa Yogananda's life and how he became one of this centuries greatest teachers. Here he presents Indian Yoga in combination to Christian teaching as we travel towards the same goal. I find this philosophy very reassuring after all, are we not looking for the same things. God and Peace.

In the Sanctuary of the Soul by Paramahansa Yogananda

A wonderful guide on how to pray. Thoughts, words, lessons and prayers to meditate and live. I am enjoying each word. "The teachings offered here embrace universal spiritual laws that will inspire people of all faiths to deepen their spiritual practice."

Metaphysical Meditations by Paramahansa Yogananda

This is the first book of Paramahansa Yogananda's teachings I purchased, many years ago. It filled with wonderful, thought provoking and inspirational messages to meditate on. The words written inside have helped bring me closer to God.

Marriage of Sense and Soul by Ken Wilber

Wow! I can not imagine anyone else being able to address the integration of science and religion any better. Not an easy task but Mr. Wibler does it with seemingly ease. It is a great read.

The Wisdom Within by Deepak Chopra

This interactive workshop created by Dr. Chopra guides you on your journey to well-being. I have just purchased this cd and am enjoying the exploration into my personalized strengths and needs of the mind body and spirit. This is an excellent tool for anyone searching for peace and balance in today's stress filled and busy world.

How to Get Well by Airola Paavo PhD

I learned a lot from this book. Here Dr. Paavo Airola tells us how foods, vitamins, supplements, herbs, juices, baths, fasting and other harmless natural remedies can help restore and maintain our health. I recommend this book again and again to all who approach me with questions on natural health.

Health and Healing by Andrew Weil

Dr. Andrew Weil illustrates the differences in allopathic and alternative medicines. In this book he explains many alternative therapies, medicines and healing practices. You will learn about holistic, osteopathy, homeopathy and Chinese medicine among others. A practical look for those interested in alternative treatments.

Jude's Herbal Home Remedies by Jude Williams MH

Jude has compiled essential information on herbal health care. Here you will find easy to make home remedies for many ailments and tips on natural household cleaners, pet care and gardening. This is a must for anyone looking to live life more naturally.

Peterson's Field Guide to Medicinal Plants by Steven Foster/James A. Duke

For any who have used Peterson Guides before you know how easy they are to use. I use this book whenever I go camping and hiking to identify and read about medicinal herbs indigenous to my area. What makes this book so easy to use is that all plants are classified by their signatures, color of flower, bark type etc, which allows for easy identification.

The Complete Medicinal Herbal by Penelope Ody

This is one of the first books I purchased when I first started studying herbal medicine. Penelope Ody has compiled valuable information on many medicinal plants. She has taken this information and organized it nicely including characteristics, actions, and applications of each herb. Also included are wonderful full color pictures of each plant for identification, which parts are used and how to prepare many home remedies. Of all the books I have purchased over the years this is the one I continue to refer back to.

The Circle of Simplicity by Cecile Andrews

This book really struck home for me. For years my New year's resolution has been to make my life less complicated. Cecile Andrews offers wonderful suggestions on how to do this, as well as how to start a simplicity circle in your area.

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Marty Becker, D.V.M. and Carol Kline

"Stories about pets as Teachers, Healers, Heroes and Friends. I rarely get the opportunity, with my studies, to read any thing save reference books, but I am so happy I picked this one up. I saw it in a Pet store and had to buy it. As a pet owner and advocate for animal welfare I hear so many horror stories regarding the treatment of God's gifts to us. I wanted to read something good for a change. The first story had me crying tears of joy, it was a wonderful feeling. I highly recommend this book especially for anyone who owns pets as well as those don't.

Country Life
A handbook for Realists and Dreamers Paul Heiney

This book is a wonderful resource for anyone considering home farming, no matter how small. What I love about this book, besides all the wonderful diagrams and pictures that aid in the instruction, is the simplicity of it. This book was written for those of us who have always wanted to "go back to the earth" but may not know exactly how to get started. It is, I feel, aimed at the small home farmer as many examples are given for 2 acre farming. Mr. Heiney discusses such topics as growing fruits, vegetables, raising, caring for and sheltering livestock, fencing and other projects to help one become more self sufficient such as bread, cider and cheese making, beekeeping, and spinning fiber to name a few. I absolutely love this book and use it frequently.
