Ask Stanton

Do you have questions about personal addictions, addictions of friends or family, appropriate treatments, the meaning of the latest research?
Ask Stanton!

How it works

Given the limitations Stanton faces in understanding your exact situation through email communication, he cannot serve as your therapist. Rather, he may give you new ways of thinking about things or helpful information. Stanton also cannot always give individual answers to readers.

Stanton only addresses questions that bring out new issues, and sometimes combines questions from multiple readers. Please look at the library areas of interest to you and the list of questions Stanton already answered (you have to do some work too!) before sending in a question. You will probably find an answer to your topic already posted somewhere on the site.

Further limitations. Please note that Stanton doesn't:

  • look up research questions for you;
  • help with your homework;
  • give referrals in your geographic location;
  • or answer suicide notes or homicide threats.

The four most common problems with questions:

  • no legitimate return address. If you want to remain anonymous, please check "anonymous" in the form below. Usually Stanton will answer your question as soon as possible, but it may take several weeks before your question and Stanton's answer is published on this website, so if you want an answer as soon as possible, please enter your email address;
  • students ask completely open-ended question because they have a paper due, like "Tell me everything you know about infant addiction";
  • questioner asks question when even the most breezy exploration of the site which would have provided them either a basic answer or would tell them they're barking up the wrong tree (e.g., "Why do so many people succumb to the disease of alcoholism?");
  • despite disclaimer at Ask Stanton that I can't be people's therapists, Stanton will often tackle quite involved personal problems — but sometimes he just can't do the questioner justice, sorry!

Now give Stanton your question (after examining the archive and looking through the library). Good luck!

State your question using the form below, or send your question by email directly to Stanton.

Please include your E-mail address in order to get a response directly from Stanton. An example of a full e-mail address would be: john@somewhere.com. This entry is used to send your e-mail so please do not add any additional characters in this field.

Questions and replies will be published in the Frequenty Asked Questions section at the Stanton Peele Addiction Web Site.
