Abnormal Liver Function Tests

One of the most common ways a person finds out about a possible problem with their liver is the discovery of elevated liver function tests. Very frequently, this occurs during blood testing for life or health insurance, or when seeing a doctor for another reason.

For example, a healthy 45-year-old man called Mr. Jones had his blood drawn as part of a screening exam for additional life insurance. The insurance company told Mr. Jones that he was ineligible because he had abnormal liver function tests. So Mr. Jones called me, explaining the problem and nervously asking what it means to have elevated liver function tests. I explained to him that it was not a medical condition in and of itself, and that I could only establish the significance of blood test results after obtaining a complete history, examining him, and reviewing the precise test results.

The following week, Mr. Jones came to my office. He told me that he felt well, worked hard at his job, and exercised regularly. He admitted that he had used intravenous drugs a few times, about 20 years previously. He told me that he currently drinks a couple of beers most days and a six pack or more some weekends. He was not taking any medications and had no other complaints. He was about 25 pounds above his ideal body weight, but otherwise his physical examination was entirely normal.

Powerful Documentary Films at HealthyPlace.com

Watch four of the most powerful mental health videos you have ever seen. These are stories about sexual molestation, rape, eating disorders and teens trapped in abusive relationships.

What makes these mental health films different and so moving is that they describe the impact of physical and sexual violence and misperceptions on their victims. And for the most part, these stories are told in the victim's or sufferer's own words.

You can watch them using your windows media player. We've also set up special bulletin boards for your feedback.

  • Always needs to be right

  • Tells you who you are and what you think

Kids and Computers - Addiction and Media Violence

The Internet has fast become a tool that children, at younger and younger ages, are utilizing. However, many parents fail to understand the hidden dangers of the Internet when they leave children unsupervised at the computer. These dangers include:

Cyber-Pedophiles - Those who intentionally prey upon children. They pretend to be young children themselves as they earn the child's trust and gradually seduce them into sexual and indecent acts. Often this happens as the unsuspecting parent sits in the next room. Parents need to educate children on the dos and don'ts of talking with strangers on the net.

Access to Pornography - Adult entertainment is the largest industry on the Internet, making it easy for children to inadvertently bump into hardcore and graphic pornography when using the Internet.

Do I Have a Drinking Problem?

Tanita wrote:

I am 18 yrs old and Im a bit worried about my drinking. I dont think I have a major problem, I'm just unsure about if there is something wrong. I dont drink everyday or anything, most of the time I just drink at the end of the week. I drink about half a bottle of vodka, maybe more on these nights. I dont even get that drunk, but I find the next day i cant recall everything that was said or what happened. I dont pass out at all. Also, the last time i drank, i got really really scared all of a sudden, for no reason. That really worried me. What does it mean???? I find myself thinking about alcohol quite frequently. Do i have a problem or am i just being stupid? Please respond i need to know!!
