Basic Principles of Good Parent/Child Communication

  • Let the child know that you are interested and involved and that you will help when needed.
  • Turn off the television or put the newspaper down when your child wants to converse.
  • Avoid taking a telephone call when the child has something important to tell you.
  • Unless other people are specifically meant to be included, hold conversations in privacy. The best communication between you and the child will occur when others are not around.
  • Embarrassing the child or putting him on the spot in front of others will lead only to resentment and hostility, not good communication.
  • Don’t tower over your child. Physically get down to the child’s level then talk.
  • If you are very angry about a behavior or an incident, don’t attempt communication until you regain your cool, because you cannot be objective until then. It is better to stop, settle down, and talk to the child later

Medical Treatments for ADHD: What Are The Options?

If your child is diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, the last thing you should do is feel alone. An estimated 3-5% of school-age children are dealing with some form of ADHD. Although the disease can be frustrating to parent and child alike, the good news is that treatment is available.

In this webcast, we’ll talk about the various medical options your doctor might recommend to treat ADHD. Joining us for this discussion, Dr. Patricia Quinn. She’s a Developmental Pediatrician who is in private practice in Washington, D.C. And Dr. Peter Jensen, Professor of Child Psychiatry at Columbia University here in New York.

The Importance of Good Communication in Childhood ADHD Treatment

On October 1, the American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Children with ADHD have difficulty controlling their behavior in school and other social settings. Though the cause of this condition is unclear, and there is no proven cure, treatment with medication and behavioral therapy has increased in recent years.

The Academy's treatment recommendations stress the importance of good communication among parents of children with ADHD and their children's doctors and teachers. Below, Dr. Peter Jensen, a child psychiatrist from Columbia University, discusses how to establish open and consistent channels of communication, and why it is so essential.

Powerful Documentary Films at HealthyPlace.com

HealthyPlace.com unveiled four of the most powerful mental health videos you have ever seen. These are stories about sexual molestation, rape, eating disorders and teens trapped in abusive relationships.

What makes these mental health films different and so moving is that they describe the impact of physical and sexual violence and misperceptions on their victims. And for the most part, these stories are told in the victim's or sufferer's own words.

You can watch them using your windows media player. We've also set up special bulletin boards for your feedback.

"Controlling People"
on HealthyPlace.com Radio

Does this sound like someone you know?

  • Always needs to be right

  • Tells you who you are and what you think

  • Implies that you're wrong or inadequate when you don't agree

  • Is threatened by people different from him or herself

  • Feels attacked when questioned

  • Doesn't seem to really hear or see you

This Saturday, find out what it takes to free yourself from controlling types; the kinds of people who inflict verbal abuse, battering, stalking, harassment, hate crimes, gang violence, tyranny, terrorism, and territorial invasion. And you can call in and ask our psychiatrist what to do about your personal situation.

Join us this Saturday evening at 4 p.m. PST, 6 CST, 7 EST as we discuss this problem. You can call in and share your stories and ask our psychiatrist your personal questions.

Call us during the live show at
800-299-5872 or 210-599-5555.
